The Interview

An interview is a great way to engage with a school, and have your own questions answered! There are a few different types of interviews, and a few tips to know going in!

  • Informational or Evaluative? An informational interview is typically a bit more informal, and usually does not directly impact your application. It is mostly to establish fit, and have your questions answered. It is still important to take informational interviews seriously, however. Evaluative interviews have some bearing on your application, whether it is simply the inclusion of these notes in your application record, or a point system, feedback system, etc.

  • Prepare! Find out the type of interview you will be having, as well as who will be conducting the interview. Some schools offer alumni interviews, student interviews, or interviews with a member of their admission staff.

    • Find out what is expected of you - should you be bringing a resume, transcript, etc?

    • Find out the time frame. It is important to be mindful of time and respect the time of your interviewer.

    • Bring questions! Even if you know everything you possibly could about a school, it is important to ask questions - even if you know the answer! Ask opinion questions to understand the perspective of your interviewer and learn more about the institution.

    • Be on time! If your interview is in person, make sure you allot time for parking, check-in, and leave room for error. If your interview is virtual, be sure you are familiar with the application, and that your video and sound are prepared. Be sure that your audio/video are working properly and that you have an appropriate and quiet background.
