Deferred?
Do not be deterred! While a deferral can feel like a rejection, I assure you it is not! If a college defers a student to Regular Decision, it means that college wants to review the student again in the context of the larger Regular Decision pool. This is not a bad thing! It may feel frustrating to elongate the wait, but there are a few things you can do to be proactive:
Letter of Continued Interest: send an email letting the school know if you are still interested. For many schools, this is encouraged or even suggested in the deferral letter. As schools think about yield potential as they model for their class, this is a great way to let them know of your intentions.
Be in touch with any updated grades or awards. Make sure your counselor knows to continue to send grades (mid-year, third term, etc.) so that you can continue to showcase your academic successes, and prove that your application continues to be competitive. If you have any updates to your activities, such as a significant award or accomplishment, be in touch with your admission rep and let them know.
Engage! Whether virtually or in person, engagement can only benefit you in this process. Whether the school tracks demonstrated interest or not, it is great to continue to engage with the schools that interest you, and you will continue to learn more at each event.
