College Visits
College visits have changed drastically over the past two years (what hasn’t?!). One benefit, however, is that colleges now offer a robust variety of visit opportunities virtually. Regardless of whether the schools you are considering value demonstrated interest in the application process, visiting is important for you to establish a sense of fit. I recommend attending as many visit programs as you can (reasonably!).
Tours and Information Sessions
Tours and information sessions are the most common type of visit program. Typically, you can expect to spend anywhere from 1-2 hours on a college campus, with a guided tour and an information session typically delivered by an admission officer. This is a great way to get to know campus. While tours are often offered throughout the summer, once you narrow your list down, I always recommend revisiting during the semester to get a good idea of campus atmosphere and activity.
Open Houses
Open Houses are typically larger programs with a fuller agenda (half to full day) where you may be able to sit in on a class, attend a resource or organization fair, meet students, listen to panels, etc. While these can be a great opportunity to learn more about a school, they can also be a bit more overwhelming for students looking for a personalized campus experience.
Virtual Programs
Why not attend a virtual session?! While you may not feel it quite replaces the in-person experience, this is a great way to assess your interest and learn more about the school. Many colleges have taken the time to develop significant opportunities and interactive programming. Check them out!
Drive through/informal visits
If you are only able to drive through campus, or walk around without a formal tour or event, make sure you follow up with the admission office after! Let them know you enjoyed your time on campus, what you saw, and ask a question or two! For schools that value demonstrated interest, this can be an important support piece to your application.
